According to present-day knowledge the moon possesses the following proven influences:
Tides: Due to the gravitational effects of the sun (approx. 1/3) and the moon (approx. 2/3), together with the daily rotation of the earth, the ocean water masses (ocean tides) as well as the continental crust (land tides) rise and fall twice daily, as a rule.
Influence on human biorythms: According to testimonies by doctors, psychiatrists, psychologists and natural scientists the following facts have been observed:
Influence on organisms: There are several organisms which direct their life cycles and reproductive rhythms strictly according to the lunar phases:
There are no measureable influences of the moon on weather and climate: The influences of the moon on the weather and climate are so minimal that they can be ignored; and yet the moon can promote the formation of condensation promoters and influence the distribution of cosmic dust around the earth, which may increase the amount of precipitation.
Bridging the gap between science and lunar beliefs (superstitions): The region between scientifically proven influences of the moon and folk beliefs is somewhat nebulous, causing a very delicate venture of science into the unknown. Folk beliefs - often superstitions - move along a narrow path of experiences and tentative hypotheses, however sometimes being caught in the broadly strewn net of long-living astrological superstition and nonsense so ever-present within broad spectrums of the general population. On this narrow path between real knowledge and pure superstition there are numerous interesting, magically-effective rules on lunar activities (concerning the various ages of man, hygiene, health, domestic activities, care of pets, woodwork and construction, garden and field, etc.). The Law of Sympathetic Action (known in the entire German-speaking area as well as outside, and know in Antiquity as well) goes generally as follows: >> That which is to grow and prosper, become good and large and develop fruitfully, must be begun and finished during a waxing moon up to its fullness; what is done concurrently with the growth of so great a heavenly body is easily accomplished; what dies, whithers, dries or dies out or rots, destroys the wicked and evil, must be done while the moon is waning, up to its disappearance. <<
