Explanation:

Just as the sun and the planets, the moon goes through the twelve signs of the zodiac. The sun covers this distance in one year, the moon in about 27 ¼ days. Because the signs of the zodiac are located at different heights above the horizon, the sun and the moon ascend maximally up to the zodiacal sign in which they are located at that time.

Thus we see a periodic ascending and descending of their orbits, the sun within a year and the moon during the period of a "month" of 27 days. In the farmer's almanacs and calendars only the signs of the zodiac are mentioned.
